Holy Moly I am ONE!

I did it!! I made it to the big 1!! I had a very special day on 1-11-11. Mommy says that the tradition in our house to eat ice cream on your birthday for breakfast! So she made me yummy breast milk ice cream. I think Mommy did it so Daddy would be grossed out and not look in the freezer for ice cream- then she can have her ice cream all to herself.
Then we went over to my BFF Jona's house for cupcakes and singing with my nanny Shirley. Shirley says I am bossy cause I am the youngest kid she watches yet I push everyone else around. Mommy says it's not bossy, I just know what I want- like her. Either way I am turning out to be a pretty confident kid. I love people and have gotten really into waving and flirting lately with whoever walks by. I also have a temper. I get so MAD when I can't have what I want. But who wants to hear about that?
Let me tell you, my toy selection has gotten a MAJOR upgrade. Christmas and birthday all in a few weeks- whew!! I am living the good life. I have two new push toys, lots of new puppets, building blocks, puzzles, and zoo animals! One of my favorite toys right now is my purple puppy that Santa brought me that calls me Noor. I like to dance with it and all of the other musical toys that Mommy wants to take the batteries out of.
But back to my birthday, the only bummer was that Daddy was playing basketball on his lunch at work and broke his ankle!! I was sad cause he said it hurt. But the coolest part was that he had to use these fun shiny crutches. I couldn't believe it- I can walk better than him.
Yep that's right, I took my first steps on Christmas Day and then this past week I really got the hang of it and can walk across the room now. I am so proud of myself that sometimes my grinning is so big it knocks me over. Daddy says I am like Mommy cause I love attention and being praised. Anyone would for the cool stuff I can do. For instance, I can walk over to my mini rocking chair, crawl up in it and rock away. Another one of my amazing feats is climbing a flight of stairs in approximately 30 seconds- beat that!
So, anyway, once Daddy came back from the hospital we had cupcakes on my birthday! I don't like sweets though, except chocolate, so I just had fun making a big mess.
Then a few days later I had NORI day!!! A bunch of my family and friends came from ALL over, even places like DELAWARE and PITTSBURGH, just to come celebrate me.
We had a special ceremony to dedicate me to God. Everyone prayed for me and I was anointed. Mama says she will keep this special oil that everyone blessed. Then when I am sick or when other special stuff happens she will get it out to bless me.
AND boy! was I blessed that day. I even wore a reaaaaaaalllly old dress that both Nana and Mama wore for their baptism. Daddy played me song on the guitar and I got to help just like when we practice at home. I am very musical and think I may have a chance at American Idol someday.
And very verbal. I really like signing- I can say eat, juice, up, nurse, and cheese. But I really like talking even more. My main words are uh-oh (this can be modified depending on the context) and eh? with an emphasis on the question mark.
I am working on da for dog and mamamamamama for Mommy. For Daddy, I just light up my whole face and move as fast as I can to get to him. I really like mimicking their words with similar sounds.
My hair is really getting long and I can't decide what to do with it. I am consider getting a product to use or maybe my bangs cut- any suggestions?
At my one year appointment we found out that my height and head are still 90% but my weight is only 40%. Dr. Cady said not to worry cause I will catch up. I like most foods, but don't find the time to eat a lot of anything. And I burn lots of calories trying to keep up with Mommmy and Daddy. I LOVE nursing though and got a little worried when Mama was talking to the doctor about something called weaning.
I am still taking two naps when I am at home, but only one at the Nanny's. There is way too much fun to be had there to sleep! We had a big snow storm last week and we made snow angels and even built a tunnel. Mama says she has so much fun on her days home with me. Sometimes we stay home, do projects and other times we go on play dates. But Mama says it's getting harder and harder to meet in public places cause I need my space to run around.
Well, I better get back to sleeping. Lovie (my blankie) and Bobo (my pacifier) are calling. Btw, when I get big I am going to have a band called "Bobo and the Lovies," starring me. My first album will go out to all of you- my friends and family.
Thanks for all your love and support of me in my first year. I couldn't have done it without you, nor could Mommy and Daddy!

My Ox Cake

I was born in the year of the ox! Mama made me an ox cake!

Choosing my Career

It is a Vietnamese tradition to choose your career on your first birthday. I gave it a lot of thought before hand, but when all the options were before me- it was hard a tough choice! I could be an athlete, doctor, cop, carpenter, car racer, rock star, cook, musician. . . but I chose the pen! I figured this gives me options: author, reporter, or artist! Mommy and Daddy are already so proud!

Nori and the Special Spot Fairy

Mommy wrote me a book for my birthday! It is all about my special spot that I was born with and how the Fairy came and took it back for other babies. I love reading it and when I grow up will remember why I have my special scar.

To Nori

A year ago my swollen body griped its walls
and birthed you
You came: wet and warm
with strength and grace
Our gaze turned to you and we have yet
to look away
You beauty dances through our days
consuming like a flame
mesmerizing like the ocean’s waves
Your spirit unfolds as your body grows
and now we know you:
your laugh, your determination
the sparkle in your eyes
My soul does magnify the Lord
How great is His love for me!
And now a year later, it is not my belly but
my heart that swelling
to its limits will surely burst

Christmas 2010

Christmas 2010

Our first Christmas Day together as a family was so fun! It was wonderfully relaxing to stay home in our new PJs that we decided will be a Christmas tradition. We got Nori two simple gifts that we didn't even wrap (I imagine Christmas will never be this easy again.) I enjoyed making us new stockings and thinking of traditions to be our own. We shared Christmas dinner with our dear friends Magalie and Francoise- Christmas (red and green!) curry for lunch and peppermint ice cream.
AND. . . our Christmas gift was seeing Nori take her first steps!
We clapped so loudly that she started to cry! Pete and I cherished some good couch time watching a few Christmas movies.
Outside of Christmas day, we saw both sides of our families: Nori had a blast with her cousins and grandparents. And of course was totally spoiled!
